Beauly truly lovely

We had 3 nights here to recuperate from the wind and the rain and get our stuff together. The site was nice enough, a holiday park but very quiet. The facilities were very modern and kept spotlessly clean and we had a few lovely walks. Day one was along the river Beauly and day too up to Loch Bam Bonnach this was a 15km walk. We didn’t get completely away from wind or the rain but we did get sunshine and we were able to put the awning up and enjoy some room too.

The campsite

Clachtoll

We loved this campsite and the situation of it. Picture – rocks, a sandy beach, beautiful blue sea and blue skies and a quirky little campsite, it was magical, it was just a shame that we experienced driving rain and 50mph winds for most the time we were there. We even had to sleep downstairs on the second night. But there was a little solace in the middle of our stay when we saw a little sunshine so we had a lovely walk out across the headland to Split rock and then inland. I was also able to fit in a small swim. The campsite was lovely a small independent site with nice facilities including a fire pit area, dog area with treats and balls, a dishwashing area with a table books and games, telescope and laundry. It was just lovely and we were made to feel very welcome by Andy and Tom.

Later on that day I was able to go for a swim in the little cove next to Clachtoll beach. The water got deep fairly quickly but it was lovely 13.6c it started to rain as I got in but it didn’t matter. I was very careful of the current as the pull felt very strong.

Waterfall walk Sunday 2nd October

On route from Scourie to Clachtoll we stopped off on route at Kylescu bridge for a walk along the loch to a waterfall. The weather stayed kind and we had a beautiful walk with stunning views across the loch back the village as well as the bridge and of course the waterfall.

Moving on from here we were hopeful of a stop for something to eat but sadly everything was shut apart from Flossie’s Beach store literally a stone’s throw away from the campsite. So we had cheese toasties and a hot chocolate.

Scourie

Another campsite another beautiful view over a natural bay complete with seals. Today we took a walk out of Scourie up and over towards Tarbet. There was a notice warning of it being tricky and very boggy which it was, but we were afforded some beautiful views.

Another beautiful beach

Friday 30th September we moved on today to Scourie and OMG the view from the van over the bay is sublime. A very different beautiful to Durness. Here a protected views, pebbles around the edge and then sandy and a beautiful clear light green sea. And a seal to boot!

Windy am I repeating myself

30th September woken up by the wind and the rain, it was 30 gusting 50mph and quite terrifying. We had packed up last night and so actually we only had the roof to close which was tricky but we managed. We then sat in the van. Mabel was happy to look out of the window initially.

We sat in the van being buffered around by the wind drinking coffee tea and eating breakfast. After the dogs were fed they were quite content to lounge around, Mabel got cosy in a little tent she made out of Tim’s dry robe.

10 year anniversary 2012 – 2022

Yes it was 10 years ago that Tim completed his first cycle ride with the lads Durness to Dover in 8 days. They arrived in Durness after a long journey and stayed in the local bunkhouse. With a free day they went for a swim, or as Tim said ran in and ran out and the next day they set off on stage 1 headed for Dingwall.

Seemed only fitting then that he had a cycle out following the start of that route. It wasn’t at all like he remembered!

And then we both had a swim down at Sango sands. It was lovely 13.7c and crystal clear water with waves.

I don’t want to move from this spot…. 28th Sept

We arrived in Durness at 11am getting their early to get a pitch and electricity and it worked. Our pitch was beautiful overlooking Sango Sands Beach Durness. I do think this is the best view of the adventure yet.

Sango Sands Durness

We had a walk out round to Balnakiel Beach, popping into Cocoa Mountain for the best hot chocolate and some rocky road. We also went to the Balnakiel craft village and I brought some coconut shampoo and conditioner bars. We walked back via the fields and it made a really nice walk!
